"I liken most high school education to a donut. It's missing the center, the chance for students to apply their minds to issues that really matter, to practice skills they truly need to be successful, to turn their idealism into action." Bernice Fedestin, Brighton High School '05, Brighton, MA

Will Power: Tackling Obesity in Adolescents
Carrabec High School, North Anson, ME

At 5:45 in the morning, most teens are still asleep. But for a group of 50 students at Carrabec High School in rural Maine, it was time to hit the weights-and the science. The Will Power program combined a rigorous exercise regimen with electronic body composition data collectors to see exactly what effect regular physical activity has on health. Students developed a multi-year study that compares results from Will Power participants with a control group of non-exercising peers. The program also planted itself in a nearby middle school where younger students are getting a head start in the weight room.
|
In one year, they inspired a 21 percent increase of in participation for activities in fitness and athletic training, a change that led to healthier eating habits in the school's cafeteria as well. The surrounding community has responded by donating supplies and equipment for future use. Will Power's long-term goals of united the students, bettering the attendance record, and decreasing school violence already see some positive gains. In the coming years, students and teachers plan to continue their work reversing the negative reputation their school has had in the community.
