"I liken most high school education to a donut. It's missing the center, the chance for students to apply their minds to issues that really matter, to practice skills they truly need to be successful, to turn their idealism into action." —Bernice Fedestin, Brighton High School '05, Brighton, MA

Educating Peers about Healthy Teen Relationships

Mission High School, San Francisco, CA

With almost 900 students, it's nearly impossible for teens at Mission High School in San Francisco to steer clear of each other. That wouldn't be a problem, according to members of a student research team, except that many Mission students lack the know-how to start and maintain healthy relationships with each other. There is so much that gets in the way, from pressures around sex to media influences to ongoing interactions with family and friends that lack mutual trust and respect.

By educating themselves on how to build healthy relationships, this research team planned school-wide workshops and a short magazine that provided students with examples of what good relationships look like and how to develop them. They also took their initiative one step further in designing a healthy relationships curriculum to present to their peers in other Bay Area high schools. Featuring music and drama, the curriculum focused on the need to form responsible relationships, both casual and intimate.
