Third Quarter Geometry

The Package Project

You are a Package Designer for a cereal company. The company needs you to design a "box for snack cereal" to contain a net weight of 8 ounces (227 grams) of cereal. You need to minimize the cost of the packaging material, as well as consider uniqueness, stack ability and other non-monetary concerns. Packaging material will cost 0.005 cents per square cm.

Part I

Task 1
Prepare report for all three designs proposals. 2 small boxes and 1 Package to ship 6 small cereal boxes that include:

  • 1. Flat patterns or net to construct the prisms (Package design)

  • 2. Calculation of surfaces areas

  • 3. Calculation of the volume of the packages

  • 4. Calculation of the ratios of the surface area and the volumes

  • 5. Cost of the surface area (material needed for the boxes)

  • 6. Fold it along the lines. Tape the edges together to form the prisms. Leave the top three edges open so that you can lift the top.

  • Task 2
    Construct a table including:
  • Prisms design

  • Surface area

  • Volume

  • Ratio surfaces areas/Volumes

  • Cost of the packages

  • Task 3
Write a report submitting your proposal, detailing all three designs and justify your recommendations.

Part II: Make a display. To complete this project, follow these steps

Step 1: Use the net of the package that you recommend.
Step 2: Prepare attractive display of your prisms. A cardboard box with the top and one side removed would make a good background for the prisms. If you like, use color to make your display more appealing.

This project represents 20% of your grade for 3rd quarter. The final due date for completion is Wednesday April 6th.
