Saturday, December 11, 2004 — Mill Valley Students Rally Against Hate After Gay-Bashing Incidents at School.  MILL VALLEY, CA: Students at Tamalpais High School yesterday demonstrated their intolerance for the kind of gay-bashing hate crimes that have been directed at a 17-year-old classmate in recent weeks. Teens from a variety of ethnic and social backgrounds rallied in front of the Mill Valley school holding banners and waving signs asserting that hate is not tolerated on the campus. Drivers showed support as they tooted their horns and gave encouraging waves to the students, who devoted their lunch break to their show of solidarity. "It really is sad this happened at our school because we are very close and we're very open," said senior Alex Sartori. "Our school is really accepting towards people." The victim, a girl who belonged to a now-defunct gay and lesbian club on campus, has been the target of repeated vandalism of her locker, car and residence in recent weeks. On campus, students yesterday shared a sense of shock, anger and unity, symbolized by lavender ribbons distributed by members of the students' leadership class. A sign reading "Tam and the community won't tolerate hate," which students have been signing to show their support, joined banners with handprints signed by students under the slogan, "I will not use my hands or my words to hurt myself or others," posted throughout the school.
