Thursday, October 06, 2005 Students from MA, NY, Egypt, and Pakistan Connect for Peace Through Video-Conference.
SOMERVILLE, MA: Students from Somerville High School and Prospect Hill Academy Charter School talked to their peers from all over the world last Thursday when they participated in the Empower Peace Broadcast held at Northeastern University. The Somerville students spoke in an Internet video-conference with high school students in Cairo, Egypt; Islamabad, Pakistan; Long Beach, N.Y.; Stoneham, Mass.; and Al-Noor Academy for Muslim students in Mansfield, Mass. Senior Rafaella Aleixo said, "We really have so much more in common than what separates us." Aleixo said students at Somerville High School, whose families came to the city from at least 50 different countries, truly do get along. "We're so diverse," said Aleixo, whose heritage is Brazilian, Italian, Portuguese and Lebanese. "If we can start that at the high school, then we can do it all over the world." Malessa Dias and Gustavo Rosa, who are seniors at the high school, also spoke during the video conference, fielding questions from students in Islamabad, including inquiries about the Boston Red Sox. The high school was also represented by a multicultural dance troupe, which included eight female students whose families came from Brazil, El Salvador, Vietnam, Haiti, Italy, Albania, Costa Rica and Ireland. The students wore colorful Haitian costumes and sang a Haitian Creole song called "AKIKO," with lyrics about peace, including "Let's sing for a better life, that one day we will all be united."
