Urban Youth Take Up the Cause of Healthy Eating

As part of a multi-city service-learning project with the National Council of La Raza, seventh graders at the Lighthouse Community Charter School in Oakland, California have taken up the cause of healthy eating. They are helping build and tend a school garden. Here, they interview each other about their daily eating habits: the foods they like and dislike, what they think of fast and junk food, the benefits of fruits and vegetables, and what “organic” means.

“There’s a radical—and wonderful—new idea here… that all children could and should be inventors of their own theories, critics of other people’s ideas, analyzers of evidence, and makers of their own personal marks on the world.”

– Deborah Meier, educator
